Frequently Asked Questions

Construction funding for Holy Trinity Academy was approved by the Government of Alberta in March of 2024. The project design phase is now complete and the project is moving to the tender phase. The groundbreaking is anticipated for Spring 2025.

On this page, you will find a collection of Frequently Asked Questions. Additional questions related to the project can be addressed by emailing info@mhcbe.ab.ca or contacting Mr. Irving.

Where will the new school be located?

Holy Trinity Academy will be located on the current St. Francis Xavier school site (318 - 8th Street N.E.) adjacent to Monsignor McCoy High School.

The school will be built behind St. Francis Xavier School.

What features are included in the project?

A new school that will serve students ELP - Grade 9, a theatre and a physical literacy space. All items requested in our Capital Plan submission have been approved for the project.

What is the timeline for the project?

The school is anticipated to open in the 2027/2028 school year (timeline subject to change).

What schools will be affected in this project?

St. Francis Xavier School, St. Michael’s School, St. Mary’s School will be included in the new project.

What schools does Holy Trinity Academy include?

Staff and students from St. Francis Xavier, St. Michael’s and St. Mary’s will join under one roof once Holy Trinity Academy construction is complete.

The remaining school buildings will be closed once students have moved to the new facility.

What grades will this school include?

Students from ELP (ages 3-5) to grade 9 will have the opportunity to attend Holy Trinity Academy.

The layout of the building separates elementary (ELP - Grade 6) and middle school (grades 7-9) by having the two groups on different levels of the school.

Will any current programming/academies be lost in the building of this new school?

None of our current programming will be lost in the transition to the new school.

We will still offer the St. FX Sports & Wellness Academy for grades 4-6, along with Fine Arts programming for elementary, and Fine Arts Academy for middle school as currently offered at St. Michael's and St. Mary's Schools.

Students attending Holy Trinity Academy will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of programming and option classes.

Will class sizes be bigger or smaller at this new school?

Class sizes are projected to stay the same in the new school. There will be less opportunity for grade splits though as with more elementary students there is more opportunity for straight grade classes.

What about services provided to students - how will these be affected?

Services will be more available to students at the new location. There will be in-house school liaison counselors, CCT workers and other service providers as they don’t need to split their time traveling to different locations.

What will the theatre look like and where will it be located?

The theatre will seat 400 and be available for use by all division schools and community groups. It will be located between Monsignor McCoy High School and the new school.

Where do I find updated information about this project?

All project updates can be found on our school division website at www.mhcbe.ab.ca/new-school-project

Stakeholders are encouraged to follow the division's Facebook and Instagram accounts for updates.

Will École St. John Paul II French Immersion be included as part of the new school?

In the original Capital Plan it was stated that École St. John Paul II French Immersion students were going to be moved over to the new school building but this has now been paused. Our division enrollment experienced a significant increase over the past year, this enrollment is positive but has created space issues in a number of schools.

The Board of Trustees and Senior Administration are in the process of reviewing programming in all schools and will be looking at the current configurations of all schools in the jurisdiction. Once a decision has been made with respect to those configurations, information will be shared with all parents, including École St. John Paul II School.
